Immediately, the Palestinian President welcomed the Stockholm government's action, calling it a "courageous and historic act." A spokesperson for the President announced, "Mr. Abbas calls on all countries around the world, if they are still hesitant about recognizing Palestine as a state, to follow the example of Sweden. Palestine is a state that gained independence in 1967 and has its capital in East Jerusalem." Conversely, in a statement, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman called it a regrettable and mistaken decision by the Stockholm government, adding that it would only fuel extremist actions in a region already plagued by conflict. Avigdor stated, "The Swedish government must understand that relations in the Middle East are very complex, and therefore it is necessary to act cautiously in response to events in this region." The US welcomed Sweden's statement with skepticism, calling the recognition of Palestine as a state "premature."
According to the Palestinian Authority, approximately 135 countries worldwide have recognized Palestine as a state. These include seven members of the European Union: the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Malta, and Cyprus. However, AFP statistics indicate that at least 113 countries recognize the Palestinian state.
According to international law professor Ove Bring, Sweden's action is "a diplomatic effect that could ultimately snowball." Professor Ove concludes that it is a psychological and political success for Palestine and those who support a two-state solution.
Ms. Margot stated that Sweden would not participate directly but would only be involved in the peace processes. Sweden has decided to increase its bilateral aid to Palestine to 500 million kroner (approximately 53.9 million euros). The Swedish Consulate General in Jerusalem stated that the current five-year aid program for Palestine is 1.5 billion kroner.
