Thuy Lam: 'Marrying the wrong person will definitely be miserable' after 15 years of marriage
Miss Universe Vietnam 2008 Thuy Lam shares her experience overcoming cultural differences when marrying into a Hanoian and affirms that her PhD husband is a worthy choice.
After 15 years of marriage, Miss Thuy Lam has shared frankly about her decision to marry far away, from the initial difficulties to her current happy life. She affirmed that choosing the right person is the most important factor, and geographical distance is not the biggest barrier.
Journey of becoming a daughter-in-law in Hanoi and homesickness during Tet
Born and raised in Ho Chi Minh City, Thuy Lam's decision to marry a Hanoian and move to the North was a big one. She could not avoid feeling bewildered when adapting to a new environment and lifestyle, 1,600km away from home.
Thuy Lam shared: "My husband and I grew up in the North and South, so we really have some issues with different lifestyles. I still remember the feeling of the first year when I celebrated Tet in Hanoi, which was also the first year I got married and was away from home. I really felt very sad."
She recounted the emotional moment: "Right after New Year's Eve, when the New Year's Eve incense was finished, Lam also called her parents and younger sister to wish them a Happy New Year. At that time, I was very sad, very sad. But I thought that Tet is a new year, I can't be sad, I have to be happy. And in the following years, the feeling of sadness and self-pity began to gradually decrease."
Understanding from a thoughtful husband and mother-in-law
According to Thuy Lam, her husband's sensitivity and understanding helped her overcome the initial difficult period. He was not only a companion but also proactively helped his wife adapt, such as practicing Southern cuisine or finding dishes with the taste of home for his wife.
Besides, the beauty queen also revealed that her mother-in-law was the one who helped, guided and encouraged her a lot during more than a decade of being a daughter-in-law. The support from her husband's family helped her ease her homesickness and gradually consider Hanoi as her second home.

From her own experience, Thuy Lam gives advice to those who are planning to marry someone far away. "If I have any advice for those who are planning to marry far away, I think it is best to choose the right person, and if they live close by, that's even better," she said.
The beauty queen emphasized: "It's not natural that I accept marrying far away, but I know that person is worthy. And until now, Lam still believes that her choice is the right one. Marrying far away is not necessarily miserable, but if you marry the wrong person, you will definitely be miserable, everyone."
A fulfilling life with a small family
Thuy Lam, whose real name is Nguyen Thuy Trang, was crowned Miss Universe Vietnam 2008 and entered the Top 15 of Miss Universe the same year. In 2010, at the peak of her career, she decided to marry her husband Nguyen Anh Tuan, a PhD in Economics who graduated in the US.
After getting married, she left showbiz, moved to Hanoi to live, focused on taking care of her family and running her own business. Currently, the couple has two children, a boy and a girl. Their first son is Nguyen Anh Khoi (born in 2010) and daughter is Nguyen Thuy An (born in 2013).
Both of Thuy Lam’s children have impressive heights. According to the revelation, Anh Khoi is about to reach 1m9, while Thuy An is already 1m72 tall, promising to become handsome men and beautiful women in the future.
