The boat was spotted near the Northern Limit Line - the de facto maritime border between the two Koreas - in the Sea of Japan and was directed south by the coast guard, the official said.
The South Korean Coast Guard is questioning the five sailors, some of whom have reportedly expressed a desire to defect to South Korea.
The incident occurred after South Korea rescued a North Korean boat that drifted in the East Sea of South Korea on June 23 due to engine trouble.
A few days later, the eight sailors on the boat were brought back home at their request./.
