He once pondered: “Every day I ask myself: what is my most satisfying book? How should I write for my main target audience? What should a children's book in the 21st century be like?” And then Thy Ngoc calmly answered himself: “The joy of a writer is the work itself. A writer is only truly happy when their work benefits life. Don't count the months or years of creating a work if that work will live on forever. However, don't forget those brilliant works, whose seemingly easy and fleeting existence has been simmering for a long time before.” Many of his experiences in writing prose and poetry still hold practical value for writers today!
InA collection of children's stories written after the August Revolution.Published by the Education Publishing House, 4th reprint in 2003, with the aim of providing elementary and junior high school students with additional reference materials to improve their Literature and Vietnamese language skills, author Thy Ngọc selected two short stories: "The White Horse's Wings" and "Spring Belongs to Us." Both stories are captivating, with profound ideas, high educational value, and are suitable for the psychology of childhood. A little white horse, once disobeying its mother, gets into trouble. Never having traveled far and lacking experience, it is fortunate to have an eagle to help it. The white horse dreams of having wings and sets out to find them quickly. The journey is full of danger. Thanks to its good friend, the eagle, who doesn't abandon it along the way when it's in trouble, the eagle finally gives the little horse a surprising gift: wings! And that's its own hooves. Thus, everyone in the world has a "pair of wings" symbolizing their strength, willpower, and talent. To find it, you need a dream, willpower, and persistent study and training...
The story "Spring Belongs to Us" is the author's message to children, a lesson about compassion and solidarity. The intelligence and unity of the gentle animals led to victory, making the wicked learn their lesson for life...
Understandably, among the many literary awards and honors bestowed upon writer Thy Ngọc, in 1987, he received a commendation from the Ministry of Education for his numerous excellent works serving the cause of children's education. Along with many other well-known names such as Tô Hoài, Đoàn Giỏi, Võ Hồng, Kim Lân, Nguyễn Huy Tưởng, Võ Quảng, Vũ Tú Nam, Phong Thu, Nguyễn Đức Hiền, Lê Vân, Hà Ân, Nguyễn Thi, Xuân Quỳnh, Duy Khán, Trần Hoài Dương, Thanh Tịnh, Lê Phương Liên... writer Thy Ngọc is a prominent figure in the world of reading culture for Vietnamese children over the past decades.
Born in 1925 in Cua Ong, Quang Ninh province, writer Thy Ngoc passed away on December 23, 2012 in Hanoi. At 87 years old, he had 70 years of professional experience, belonging to a generation of writers fortunate enough to have close relationships with literary giants such as Nam Cao, To Hoai, and Nguyen Huy Tuong in his youth. Immediately after Thy Ngoc's death, Nguyen Huy Thang, currently working at Kim Dong Publishing House and son of Nguyen Huy Tuong, wrote: “Thy Ngoc was among the few pre-war writers who lived and wrote persistently until his passing.” Such a respectful assessment, I believe, is not something every writer receives!
