Bolt's 9.81 seconds was well off his world record of 9.58 and Olympic record of 9.63. It was also 0.01 seconds off Justin Gatlin's season best. In this year's 100m final, Bolt did not show the superiority over his opponents that he showed in the previous two Olympics.
As usual, the Jamaican star started slow compared to his opponents. It was not until the last 50m that Bolt accelerated and overtook Gatlin. This was Bolt's best result of the year but this was the worst 100m world championship result of his career.
After finishing the race, Bolt performed his familiar lightning-like celebration. His name was chanted repeatedly in the stands and even other famous athletes such as Jessica Ennis-Hill rushed to ask for a photo with the fastest runner on the planet.
This is Usain Bolt's third Olympic 100m gold medal and his seventh Olympic gold medal. After this event, the Jamaican star will continue his campaign to defend his 200m and 4x100m relay gold medals.
