Okinawa Island is home to several important US military bases, including Kadena Airport. More than half of the 47,000 US troops in Japan are also stationed in Okinawa under the security alliance agreement.
Okinawans have long complained about noise and accidents related to US military operations on the island. An American F-15 fighter jet crashed off the coast of Okinawa in May 2013.
