Fighter jet crashes into sea during demonstration, pilot dies

An Italian air force Typhoon fighter jet crashed into the water after the pilot failed to regain altitude after a dive.

A Typhoon fighter jet with registration number MM7278/RS-23 of the Italian Air Force crashed on September 24 while participating in a demonstration flight in the Terracina sea area, killing one pilot, according to Aviationist.

Video released to the media shows pilot Captain Gabriele Orlandi failing to regain altitude while performing a dive, causing the plane to plunge into the water.Orlandi did not have time to activate his ejection seat and died after the crash.

This is the second crash of a Typhoon fighter jet in the past two weeks. On September 13, a Saudi Arabian Air Force Typhoon crashed into a mountain in Yemen while carrying out an airstrike mission against Houthi rebels.

The Typhoon fighter is co-produced by BAE (UK), Airbus (France) and Finmeccanica (Italy), optimized for the air superiority role, but still capable of effectively performing ground attack missions.

Typhoon is equipped with two Eurojet EJ200 jet engines allowing it to reach a maximum speed of 2,400 km/h and an operating range of 2,900 km.

The aircraft is capable of carrying various weapons such as ASRAAM, AIM-120, AIM-9 air-to-air missiles, Paveway smart bombs, JDAM, Brimstone air-to-ground missiles, Taurus KEPD 350, Storm Shadow. Total weapon payload is about 7.5 tons.
