Hoang Vu Samson (Nigeria) came to Vietnam to play in 2007 for the first division club Than Quang Ninh. In 2009, he joined Dong Thap Rubber Group in the V-League. During his three years with the Western team, Samson scored nearly 50 goals in 49 appearances.
In August 2011, the Nigerian striker left Dong Thap to play for Atletico Madrid. However, Samson could not join the Spanish team because he had previously signed a memorandum of understanding with Hanoi T&T (now Hanoi). After working with the Hanoi club's leadership, he agreed to play for the capital team as previously agreed because he could not afford to pay compensation for the contract.

After more than half a decade playing for Hanoi FC, Samson has always been an indispensable pillar of this team, scoring an average of 15 goals per season. By the end of the 2017 season, Samson had scored 90 goals in 122 matches for Hanoi FC. He is currently the number 1 scorer in the history of V-League with more than 130 goals.
In 2013, Samson officially became a Vietnamese citizen after his naturalization procedure was approved. Therefore, when joining Buriram, Samson will help this club meet the requirement of having at least 1 Southeast Asian player set by the Thai-League (Thai Championship) organizing committee from the 2018 season.
In fact, Buriram signing a contract with Samson was quite surprising because previously, many sources from the Thai press confirmed that Buriram wanted to recruit striker Nguyen Van Quyet. However, this deal failed because Hanoi FC did not want Van Quyet to leave. Therefore, the Thai League champion turned to Samson.
