July 12, 2016 08:43

(Baonghean.vn)- From the victory of the pro-EU faction to the new "owner" of 10 Downing Street, new Prime Minister Theresa May, let's take a look back at the major milestones in the political and social life of the "foggy island nation" since the historic referendum on June 23.

British voters choose Brexit

On June 23, 2016, British voters, many of whom feared a wave of immigration, voted to leave the European Union (EU) after four decades of membership.

On June 23, British voters voted to leave the EU.

Britain will be the first country to leave the 28-member "European common roof", because London wants to regain sovereignty and freedom.

Voter turnout was over 72%.

Financial market "crazy"

The surprise result of the referendum sent a wave of negative sentiment through global markets the following day, June 24, highlighting fresh uncertainty in a world already battered by weak growth.

Stock markets, the pound and oil prices plummeted.

On June 27, ratings agencies Standard & Poor’s and Fitch downgraded the UK’s credit rating. In the first week of July, several UK financial groups suspended trading in commercial real estate funds, blaming the uncertainty of the Brexit decision.

Prime Minister Cameron resigns

British Prime Minister and leader of the ruling Conservative Party, David Cameron, who called the referendum and campaigned for “Britain to stay in the EU”, has decided to resign to make way for a new leader.

Faced with the people's choice to leave the EU, Prime Minister David Cameron decided to resign.

He has “ceded” the responsibility of triggering the process of Britain leaving the EU to his successor.

EU urges quick divorce proceedings

“This process needs to start as soon as possible, so that we do not have to prolong the limbo,” German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier asserted.

However, Britain appears determined to pursue Brexit at its own pace.

Labor Party Crisis

On June 26, a series of senior MPs from the opposition Labour Party withdrew from the government in protest against the Party's leader, Jeremy Corbyn.

Labour MPs passed a vote of no confidence in Mr Corbyn, but he refused to resign. On 11 July, Angela Eagle challenged Mr Corbyn for the party leadership.

Cameron's "Farewell Song" in the EU

Mr Cameron's last appearance at the EU summit was on 28 June, and EU leaders agreed to give Britain more time to trigger Article 50 and begin negotiations to leave the bloc.

However, German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned that the EU would be “tough” on Britain and would not grant it more privileges.

The race for leadership in the "foggy island nation"

On June 30, Brexit leader Boris Johnson unexpectedly announced that he would not be running to become British Prime Minister. Later, UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader Nigel Farage also announced his resignation from the position.

A Brexiteer and Justice Secretary, Michael Gove, entered the race to succeed Mr Cameron, but was soon eliminated in an internal Conservative Party vote.

Home Secretary Theresa May, a hardliner on immigration, and Energy and Climate Change Secretary Andrea Leadsom have entered the two-horse race to become the second “Iron Lady”.

However, Ms. Leadsom suddenly withdrew from the race on July 11. Thus, Ms. May has officially become the new female Prime Minister to succeed Mr. Cameron, and will take office after Mr. Cameron's question-and-answer session in Parliament tomorrow, July 13./.
