“We will now be looking deep and wide at the areas we are capable of searching, which cover about 60,000 square kilometres of seabed off the west coast of Australia,” Prime Minister Tony Abbott told ABC television, adding that the search could take up to a year.
Flight MH370 stopped all contact with air traffic control an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur on March 8. The plane changed course completely, heading westward en route to Beijing. No trace of the plane has been found. Based on satellite data, investigators believe the plane flew to the southern Indian Ocean where it crashed after running out of fuel. So far, searches have turned up nothing, but investigators have received equipment that will allow deep-water exploration with the help of a specialist Dutch company.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott said, “If the plane is at the bottom of the sea, we have the best technology to find it.” The most likely explanation for the plane’s disappearance, according to officials leading the investigation, is a sudden drop in oxygen levels in the cabin, which knocked the crew unconscious. The plane continued to operate on autopilot until it crashed into the sea after running out of fuel.
