At a recent meeting with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Finance, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai directed the consideration of a plan to temporarily store 1 million tons of rice from the 2013 summer-autumn crop to stabilize rice purchase prices for farmers, support rice export businesses, and help curb the current complicated price decline.

The Deputy Prime Minister assigned the Vietnam Food Association to preside over and coordinate with the People's Committees of the Mekong Delta provinces to allocate the quota for temporary storage of summer-autumn rice, taking into account the commercial rice output of each locality. The relevant ministries and branches shall guide, inspect and supervise the implementation of temporary storage, ensuring compliance with regulations and achieving efficiency. The Ministry of Finance has also announced the average production cost of summer-autumn rice in the Mekong Delta region at 4,142 VND/kg, equivalent to the target rice price of 5,383 VND/kg. According to regulations, enterprises must ensure to buy rice from farmers at a price that generates a profit of at least 30%.
