Surprising revelations about 5 factors affecting divorce in Vietnam
The results of a recent survey conducted by the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences in Hanoi, Khanh Hoa and Tien Giang (with 900 survey samples, including 438 divorced people) partly show the picture of the divorce rate taking place in Vietnam.

More women are participating in the labor force for wages outside the home, there is more gender equality. The survey on “Factors affecting divorce in Vietnam: Case studies of Hanoi, Khanh Hoa and Tien Giang” with 900 samples, nearly 50% (438 people) of which were divorced; the results showed that: Education level, parents deciding on their children's marriage, rural or urban residence before first marriage, marital conflicts, adultery, sex, family's ability to contribute economically... have a certain impact on divorce:
1.With the impact of place, if before getting married, the husband was in an urban area and the wife was in a rural area, the divorce rate is the highest (15.7%). If before getting married, the wife was in an urban area and the husband was in a rural area, the divorce rate is 2.8% - the cause could be due to differences and conflicts in lifestyle, habits, behavior...
2. About education level, the higher the education level, the higher the possibility of divorce. Of the total 438 divorced people, 185 women and 80 men had college, university or post-graduate degrees, while the rate for people with primary school education was only 78 women (17.8%) and 24 men (5.4%).
3. On the impact of occupational and economic factorsWorkers, unskilled laborers, and non-agricultural laborers tend to divorce more than farmers. Couples in which the wife or someone else is the main contributor to the family income are at higher risk of divorce than couples in which the husband or both contribute. Specifically, 4.1% of the surveyed divorced people said that the reason for divorce was because the wife was the main economic contributor, 8% of divorces were because the couple was economically dependent on someone else...

4. On the impact of family conflict:Families with frequent conflicts, violence (mainly caused by husbands to wives), adultery, gambling, and alcohol are at higher risk of divorce than other families. The percentage of women who said they divorced for the first time according to the level of conflict between husband and wife surveyed was due to weekly/monthly conflicts, which was 12.6% (if the conflict was less than monthly, it was only 1.3%)...
If there are conflicts due to jealousy, sex and adultery occurring weekly/monthly, the divorce rate is 10%, while if there are no conflicts of this type or conflicts are infrequent, the divorce rate is only 1.1%...
5. Finally, about the time of marriage, the results show that divorce occurs most often in the first 5 years and the first 10 years after marriage. The longer the courtship, the lower the risk of divorce.
According to the sociological research of Dr. Nguyen Minh Hoa (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City), the divorce rate in Vietnam is 31.4%, meaning that for every 3 married couples, 1 couple gets divorced. 60% of these divorces are in young families, the age of the couple is only from 21 to 30, of which 70% of the divorces are after 1-7 years of marriage and most of them have children.
