According to Dr. Vu Manh Loi - representative of the group of authors conducting the research project, said: "Before starting this investigation and research, we asked the question: What economic and social factors affect divorce in Vietnam? This is a very difficult topic because divorce in Vietnam has changed a lot recently due to the social context with many changes such as industrialization, urbanization, openness, and strong international integration.

More women are participating in the labor force for wages outside the home, there is more gender equality. In terms of marriage, the age of marriage has also increased, the marriage market has expanded. Sex is separated from marriage (can have sex before marriage, sex unrelated to marriage...). Marriage is based on love and self-determination more and more. The concept of love, marriage, divorce, separation is more liberal and nuclear family, with fewer children is increasingly expanding...

In that context, Vietnamese families have changed a lot, members care more about personal freedom. Each person's concept of happiness is also different while the demand for happiness is increasing day by day...

The actual investigation on "Factors affecting divorce in Vietnam: Case study of Hanoi, Khanh Hoa and Tien Giang" with 900 survey samples, nearly 50% (438 people) of which were divorced; the results showed that: Education level, parents deciding on their children's marriage, rural or urban residence before first marriage, marital conflicts, adultery, sex, the family's ability to contribute economically... have a certain impact on divorce:

1.With the impact on the place of residence, if before getting married, the husband was in an urban area and the wife was in a rural area, the divorce rate was the highest (15.7%). If before getting married, the wife was in an urban area and the husband was in a rural area, the divorce rate was 2.8% - the cause could be due to differences and conflicts in lifestyle, habits, behavior...

2. About education level, the higher the education level, the higher the likelihood of divorce. Of the 438 divorcees, 185 women and 80 men had college, university, or post-graduate degrees, while the rate for people with primary school education was only 78 women (17.8%) and 24 men (5.4%).

3. On the impact of occupational and economic factorsWorkers, unskilled laborers, and non-agricultural workers tend to divorce more than farmers. Couples in which the wife or someone else is the main contributor to the family income are at higher risk of divorce than couples in which the husband or both contribute. Specifically, 4.1% of the divorcees surveyed said that the reason for divorce was because the wife was the main economic contributor, 8% of divorces were because the couple was economically dependent on someone else...

4. On the impact of family conflict:Families with frequent conflicts, violence (mainly caused by husbands to wives), adultery, gambling, and alcohol use are at higher risk of divorce than other families. The percentage of women who said they divorced for the first time according to the level of conflict between husband and wife surveyed was due to weekly/monthly conflicts was 12.6% (if the conflict was less than monthly, it was only 1.3%)...

If there are conflicts due to jealousy, sex and adultery happening weekly/monthly, the divorce rate is 10%, while if there are no conflicts of this type or conflicts are infrequent, the divorce rate is only 1.1%...

5. Finally, about the time of marriage, the results show that divorce occurs most often in the first 5 years and the first 10 years after marriage. The longer the courtship, the lower the risk of divorce.

According to the sociological research of Dr. Nguyen Minh Hoa (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City), the divorce rate in Vietnam is 31.4%, meaning that for every 3 married couples, 1 couple gets divorced. 60% of these divorces are in young families, the age of the couple is only from 21 to 30, of which 70% of the divorces are after 1-7 years of marriage and most of them have children.
