The US testing of the B61-12 is said to be to counter the military power of Russia and China. |
During the testing, Spirit B-2 strategic bombers were used.
"This flight test demonstrates that the B61-12 design meets system requirements and represents further progress on the B61-12 life extension program in line with national security requirements," said Michael Lutton, an official with the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration.
The test of the experimental assembly of the device was conducted on June 9 at the military test site in Nevada under the direction of the Commander of the 419th Test Squadron at Edwards Air Force Base.
The original B61 gravity bomb was the backbone of the Air Force's nuclear arsenal, along with intercontinental ballistic missiles deployed from land-based silos or submarines.
The B61 nuclear gravity bomb, deployed from US and NATO air bases, has been in service for nearly 50 years, making it the oldest and most versatile weapon in the US permanent stockpile.
The US plans to deploy B61-12s at military bases in Europe such as Germany, Italy, Türkiye, Belgium and the Netherlands.

In its “Nuclear Posture Review” report released by the Department of Defense in January, the Pentagon stressed the need to modernize its nuclear triad amid threats from rivals such as China and Russia.
“Russia and China are pursuing asymmetric means and methods to counter U.S. conventional capabilities, thereby increasing the risk of miscalculation and the potential for military confrontation with the United States and its allies,” the report said.
The British news agency Express also quoted the report as saying: "Russia has shown its willingness to use force to change the map of Europe and impose its will on its neighbors through threats of nuclear weapons."
In addition to deploying the B61-12 on long-range bombers such as the B-2A Spirit bomber, the US is also planning to make the bomb compatible with the F-35 Lightning II 5th generation fighter jets.
Former President Barack Obama authorized a nuclear modernization program during his term. President Donald Trump has since revised it into an ambitious 30-year project that will cost at least $1.2 trillion to complete. Of that, about $800 billion will be spent on maintaining tactical nuclear forces, while about $400 billion will be spent on modernizing them.
The latest test in Nevada is the third in a series of tests to be completed over the next three years.
“These qualification tests demonstrate that the B61-12 design meets system requirements and illustrate the progress of the B61-12 life extension program to meet national security requirements,” said Gen. Michael Lutton, NNSA’s principal assistant deputy administrator for military applications. “The achievement is also a testament to the dedication of the workforce and the long-standing partnership between NNSA and the U.S. Air Force,” said Gen. Lutton.
