There are currently about 300 female traffic police officers in Pyongyang. Their beauty and unique appearance are often captured by foreign reporters and tourists visiting the city.
"They represent the capital. That's why they were chosen based on their looks and physique," said a senior officer in charge of traffic at the North Korean Ministry of Public Security.
Female traffic police first became known in the 1980s when vehicles were still very rare on the streets of Pyongyang.
The job of these "beauties" is to direct traffic on the streets of Pyongyang. They stop doing this duty if they get married, and must quit when they turn 26.
This rule exists because "normally, girls in our country get married at the age of 26 or 27. Because the task is difficult and strict, they can only take it on when they are single," the officer further explained.

On duty at Chanjon intersection in central Pyongyang, 24-year-old Captain Ri Myong-Sim described: "I have to make every move and gesture with spirit and discipline." North Korea began having female traffic police officers in the 1980s, when traffic in Pyongyang was still sparse. When they become members of the security force, the girls wear the rank of officer.
Nowadays, traffic in Pyongyang is busier and traffic lights have been installed at intersections. However, the beautiful policewomen still continue their work diligently, with one hour on and one hour off.
