In the third quarter of 2017, five motorcycle manufacturers in Vietnam sold 845,604 vehicles, a 14% increase compared to the second quarter of 2017, according to the Vietnam Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (VAMM).

Thus, by the end of September 2017, the total number of motorcycles sold by the 5 VAMM members (Honda, Yamaha Motor, Piaggio, Suzuki, and SYM Vietnam) reached over 2.37 million units. Including imported motorcycles and those produced by some businesses outside VAMM, the estimated total number of motorcycles sold in the entire market is approximately 2.4 million units. In contrast, in the whole of 2016, these businesses only sold over 3.12 million vehicles, an increase of 9.5% compared to 2015.

Motorcycle sales continue to increase in Vietnam.

It can be seen that motorcycle consumption continues to steadily increase, despite the roadmap to restrict motorcycles being implemented by the authorities of major cities. Specifically, at the end of August, Hanoi approved a project to strengthen the management of road transport vehicles to reduce traffic congestion and environmental pollution in the area, for the period 2017-2020 with a vision to 2030. This includes preparing the necessary conditions to stop the operation of motorcycles in the districts by 2030.

In Ho Chi Minh City, although there is no official roadmap for a ban yet, the city will control the demand for motorbikes while encouraging people to use public transportation.

According to statistics, the total number of motorcycles and scooters in circulation in Vietnam by the end of 2016 was approximately over 45 million, reaching a ratio of 1 motorcycle/scooter for every 2 people.

According to the owner of a motorcycle dealership in District 5, Ho Chi Minh City, the demand for trading in old motorcycles for newer models, especially scooters and fashionable bikes, continues to increase. Furthermore, although car prices are falling, the majority of people still cannot afford to own one. Therefore, Vietnam remains a lucrative market for foreign motorcycle manufacturers, continuing to rank fourth in terms of sales volume worldwide.

In particular, automakers have high expectations for the scooter segment, which currently holds over 45% of the market share and is expected to be a strong growth segment in the coming years as per capita income increases.
