Scientists at King's College London, UK, have discovered how the body naturally regulates blood pressure.

Research published in the journal Hypertension shows that blood pressure naturally drops when nerves surrounding arteries release nitric oxide (NO).

Scientists say the discovery marks a major shift in how they view blood pressure. Previously, experts thought nitric oxide was produced naturally within the walls of blood vessels, rather than the bundles of nerves that surround them. The new research provides an important link between blood pressure and emotions, because these nerves have direct links to the brain.

They also hope that this discovery could allow us to mimic the body's way of regulating blood pressure, with the aim of creating a highly effective treatment drug.

High blood pressure can cause serious damage to the heart, brain, eyes, and kidneys.

Specifically, studies were conducted on healthy men with normal blood pressure. These men used a drug that inhibits the nerves that produce nitric oxide. The results showed that their blood pressure increased.

Professor Ajay Shah, who led the research team, said: "Our discovery fundamentally changes the way we look at regulating blood pressure. Until now, most blood pressure drugs have focused on other routes. Being able to get nerves to release nitric oxide to stabilise blood pressure is a new target for future blood pressure drugs."

Jeremy Pearson, of the British Heart Foundation, which funded the research, said: "Although there are many treatments for high blood pressure, they are not always effective. But this research gives hope for new treatments for people with high blood pressure. This is vital in preventing a heart attack or stroke."

High blood pressure, also known as "hypertension," is a very common health condition that affects up to one-third of adults.

High blood pressure can cause serious damage to the heart, brain, eyes, and kidneys, and if it occurs frequently it can lead to heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, and other serious health conditions.

Of those diagnosed with high blood pressure, hundreds of thousands take medication daily to control their condition. However, current treatment is effective for only about half of patients.
