According to Voigt, these vertebrate remains were found in an open-pit quarry in Bochum. They have been identified as fossils of an animal that lived 316 million years ago on the banks of a major river that flowed through what is now the Ruhr region.

According to Daniela Schwarz Wings from the Berlin Natural History Museum, these are fossils of four-legged herbivorous reptiles, and the age of these fossils is of particular interest to scientists. From this, scientists can determine how many such animals were once common in Europe and for how long they existed.

On June 17th, experts will deliver the fossil samples to the Natural History Museum in Munster, after which they will be displayed at the German Mining Museum in Bochum.
