(baonghean.vn) - The second patient to receive an artificial heart manufactured by Carmat, France, has surpassed the life expectancy of the first patient – according to the doctor who performed the surgery at the Nantes regional hospital..

Quả tim nhân tạo của hãng Carmat đã được cấy thử nghiệm trên 2 bệnh nhân, hiện có 1 người còn sống.
Carmat's artificial heart has been implanted in two patients in trials, and one is still alive.

Having undergone artificial heart transplant surgery on August 5, 2014, the second patient spent 77 days with the Carmat artificial heart. The first patient was a 76-year-old man who underwent surgery on December 18, 2013, and passed away 74 days later. According to Professor Daniel Duveau of Nantes, this is "an extremely positive sign" of the effectiveness of artificial hearts.

The identity of the second patient has not yet been revealed, but according to the Presse-Ocean newspaper, he is a man from the Loire-Atlantic region and is currently being monitored in the hospital. The newspaper Tay Phap adds that this patient is over 70 years old. Suffering from end-stage heart failure, he is ineligible to receive a donated heart from another person.

Carmat, the company that created the artificial heart, considers the surgery successful if the patient survives past the 30th day after the operation. "The data testing process is based on each stage of the patient's life: 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, and beyond... A total of four heart transplant surgeries are needed before a final conclusion can be reached on this first trial," Professor Duveau explained to Presse-Ocean. Therefore, two more patients are still being considered for artificial heart transplants. On Tuesday, October 21st, Carmat presented its financial results and plans for the next phase of the artificial heart project. This phase will likely require 20 experimental transplant surgeries.
