According to South Korean news agency Yonhap, North Korea appears to have conducted a nuclear test at noon on September 3 local time, possibly the country's sixth nuclear test.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) and the China Earthquake Administration measured an earthquake in North Korea at the same time at 6.3 on the Richter scale in the East Northeast of the Sungjibaegam area.

The USGS said the epicenter of the earthquake was only 10km deep. Recent earthquakes in North Korea have all been caused by nuclear tests.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said the artificial earthquake was recorded in North Hamgyeong Province of North Korea at 12:36 local time.

The sixth nuclear test (if any) follows a series of long-range missile tests by North Korea, which violated UN Security Council resolutions and were strongly condemned by the international community.

A few hours earlier, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on September 3 that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had inspected a hydrogen bomb (H-bomb) that could be mounted on the country's new intercontinental ballistic missile.
