Statistics from 10 studies with 8,000 pregnant women in 9 countries including Argentina, Uruguay, Ecuador, Brazil and Guatemala in Latin America, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa, two places in India and one place in Pakistan showed that: 18% of women smoke (an increase of 1/3) and about 4,000 people are always in a state of passive smoking.

Children of mothers who smoked or were exposed to secondhand smoke during pregnancy are more stubborn and grumpy, and researchers believe that mothers who are able to focus on quitting the harmful habit also care more about their children in other ways.

Researchers found that children of mothers who smoked had more mood swings than children of mothers who quit, suggesting that quitting smoking and living in a smoke-free environment is especially important.

Smoking can affect the development of the fetus and even the babies if they inhale cigarette smoke through the mother.

The results come from a large study of 18,000 babies born between 2000 and 2002, and their mothers, who were asked a series of questions about their children's temperaments.

The study also found that the most obvious sign of quitting smoking was that mothers became more easygoing. Women who quit smoking during pregnancy were more responsible. This was reflected in longer lasting relationships, better social skills, and less broken or stressful lives. They were also less likely to engage in social problems and antisocial behavior than mothers who continued to smoke during pregnancy.
