The main feature of the Su-22 is a fighter-bomber, but some versions such as the Su-22M4 act as an air defense fighter. The plane can carry 4 tons of bombs with an operating time of many hours, with an operating radius of about 600km.

Basic specifications: Crew of 1; length 19.03 m; wingspan 10.02 m (swept) or 13.68 m (spread); height 5.12 m; empty weight 12,160 kg, maximum take-off weight 19,430 kg.

The aircraft is equipped with a Lyulka AL-21F-3 engine with a capacity of 76.5 kN (17,200 lbf) and up to 109.8 kN (24,675 lbf) when burning afterfuel for a maximum speed of 1,860 km/h; range of 2,300 km; service ceiling of 14,200 m.

The Su-22M4's armament includes two 30mm NR30 cannons with 80 rounds of ammunition, and the wing-mounted weapon stations allow carrying a payload of 4,000 kg of weapons including bombs, air-to-ground missiles and R-60 air-to-air missiles.

The identifying feature of the Su-22M4 is that the aircraft has 1 air intake for the engine cooling system located on the front, above the vertical wing root and 2 additional positions for mounting jamming missiles for heat-seeking missiles and radar-guided missiles on the fuselage.

The Su-22M4 attack aircraft - the most modern variant of the Su-22 line - can carry two Kh-29 air-to-ground missiles.

The Kh-29 air-to-ground missile (NATO designation AS-14 Kedge) was developed by the Vympel Design Bureau (now part of the Russian Tactical Missile Corporation KTRV) to equip the MiG-29, Su-30/33/35 multi-role fighters and Su-22/25/34 attack aircraft.

The missile is designed primarily to attack large land targets (including warehouses, yards, factories, bridges, airports). However, when necessary, it can be used to attack targets at sea. According to the manufacturer's advertisement, the Kh-29 is capable of causing serious damage to warships with a displacement of up to 10,000 tons. With the Kh-29, the Su-22M4's maritime combat capability is significantly increased, allowing it to destroy warships of all sizes with high accuracy.
