Nghe An Provincial People's Court sets date for appeal trial of Le Thi Dung case

Speaking to Nghe An Newspaper reporter, Mr. Tran Quoc Cuong - Chief of Office of Nghe An Provincial People's Court said that the Provincial People's Court has decided to bring Le Thi Dung's case to the appeal trial, at 8:00 a.m. on June 12, 2023.

In the first instance criminal verdict, the People's Court of Hung Nguyen district sentenced defendant Le Thi Dung to 5 years in prison (the lowest level of the penalty framework); Nguyen Thi Huong (former accountant of the Continuing Education Center of Hung Nguyen district) to 2 years of suspended imprisonment for the crime of "Abusing position and power while performing official duties".

After the first instance trial, defendant Le Thi Dung and her family filed an appeal against the entire first instance judgment. The Provincial People's Procuracy issued an appeal requesting the Provincial People's Court to review the appeal in the direction of annulling the first instance judgment for reinvestigation and retrial.

The appeal decision of the Provincial People's Procuracy has been served to the People's Court of Hung Nguyen district and defendant Le Thi Dung, who is currently being detained at the Provincial Police Detention Center.

Previously, on April 7, 10, 11, 17 and 24, 2023, Hung Nguyen District People's Court opened the first-instance trial of the criminal case against the defendants Le Thi Dung and Nguyen Thi Huong, prosecuted by the Hung Nguyen District People's Procuracy for the crime of "Taking advantage of position and power while performing official duties".

According to the content of the case, in her position as Director of the Continuing Education Center of Hung Nguyen district, during the period 2012-2017, defendant Le Thi Dung declared a number of payments twice for a financial transaction.

Specifically, the payment content: Party cell secretary; support for graduate studies and training, defendant Le Thi Dung has paid the first payment in accordance with the provisions of law. Then, continue to convert these contents into teaching hours to pay for overtime (2nd payment) in 2015 with the amount of more than 30.9 million VND; in 2016 with the amount of 13.8 million VND. The total amount of more than 48 million VND was transferred to Le Thi Dung's personal account.
