The Brazilian Senate held an extraordinary trial on the evening of August 25, chaired by Mr. Lewandowski, to impeach Ms. Rousseff.

At the trial, Ms. Rousseff's defense attorney argued that there had been a number of violations during the process of indicting his client. However, Mr. Lewandowski rejected the defense attorney's arguments and even banned one of Ms. Rousseff's witnesses from attending the trial.

After the end of the hearing in the court, Mr. Lewandowski announced that senators would hold a vote to decide whether to impeach Ms. Rousseff. The exact date for the vote has not yet been set.

If two-thirds of the senators in the Brazilian Senate, or 54, agree to impeach her, Rousseff will be officially removed from office. If the opposite happens, the impeachment will end and Rousseff will continue her presidency.

Earlier in May 2016, the Brazilian Senate approved the impeachment of Ms. Rousseff after a vote of 55-22. Ms. Rousseff was accused of concealing a serious budget deficit before the 2014 election and violating provisions of Brazilian electoral law. However, Ms. Rousseff said the impeachment was an attempt to overthrow her government and insisted that she did not violate Brazilian law.
