Nghe An Court sentences 5 defendants to death for trafficking 'huge' amount of drugs

After many days of trial, on the morning of November 24, the People's Court of Nghe An province sentenced 5 defendants: Nguyen Duc Chom (born in 1962), Pham Van Khang (born in 1990), Ta Van Cuong (born in 1989), all residing in Hai Duong City (Hai Duong), Vu Dinh Hai (born in 1973), residing in Dan Phuong District, Hanoi City and defendant Pham Van Thanh (born in 1983), residing in Thanh Ha District (Hai Duong) for the crime of“Illegal drug trafficking”In addition, Hai was also prosecuted for the crime of "Illegal possession of narcotics".
According to the indictment, from March to May 2020, Chom directed Khang, Cuong, Hai, and Thanh to illegally buy and sell drugs twice.
The first time, on the morning of March 26, 2020, Cuong drove a car carrying 35,000 USD, while Khang took a taxi to Nghe An to buy 6kg of Ketamine for Chom.

That same evening, the two met in Thai Hoa town (Nghe An). Afterwards, Cuong and Khang drove to Thong Thu border gate, Que Phong district, to buy more than 5.8 kg of drugs for 35,000 USD.
On the way back, Khang got off and took another car, while Cuong continued his journey. When the car driven by Cuong reached Nghia My commune, Thai Hoa town, the police caught him red-handed and confiscated the drugs.
Expanding the investigation, the police agency urgently arrested Pham Van Khang. Thus, Chom, Khang, and Cuong must bear criminal responsibility for the act of buying and selling more than 5.8 kg of Ketamine.
Second time: On the morning of May 7, 2020, Hai drove a car with Thanh carrying 25,000 USD from Hanoi to Nghe An to buy drugs for Nguyen Duc Chom.
That same evening, when approaching Thong Thu border gate, Thanh took the money into the forest and gave it to a man, then received a bag of drugs with a total weight of nearly 2kg.
At 11pm the same day, when the subjects reached Chau Hoi commune, Quy Chau district, the police signaled to stop the vehicle. At this time, Hai drove the vehicle 6km away and then stopped. Thanh threw the drugs on the roadside and was discovered and confiscated by the police.
The investigation agency determined that in this second time, Chom, Hai, and Thanh had bought and sold nearly 2kg of various types of drugs. In addition, Hai also illegally possessed 1.185 grams of drugs.
By August 2020, the police had arrested Nguyen Duc Chom. Thus, the total amount of drugs that Chom must bear criminal responsibility for in the two transactions is more than 7.7 kg.
The panel of judges determined that the defendants’ criminal acts were particularly dangerous. The prosecution of the defendants for illegal drug trafficking was the right person, the right crime, the right law, and there was no injustice.
With an especially large amount of drugs, the People's Court sentenced the defendants: Nguyen Duc Chom, Pham Van Khang, Ta Van Cuong, Vu Dinh Hai, and Pham Van Thanh to death.
