Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that the plane carrying US President Donald Trump will land at Noi Bai airport on the evening of February 26 and he is expected to have his second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Hanoi on February 27-28.
President Trump announced on Twitter on February 24 that he will depart for Vietnam early in the morning of February 25 (evening of February 25, Vietnam time).
Speaking at an international press conference on preparations for the US-North Korea summit this morning, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung said that President Donald Trump will not make an official visit to Vietnam on this occasion but will meet with Vietnamese leaders to discuss bilateral relations and important issues.
Meanwhile, the news agencyYonhapSouth Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the train carrying North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will arrive in Vietnam on the morning of February 26. Kim Jong-un will pay an official friendship visit to Vietnam on this occasion, but the specific time has not been announced.
At the first US-North Korea summit on June 12, 2018 in Singapore, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un signed a joint statement, pledging to cooperate towards denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, building new relations between the two countries and ensuring lasting peace in the region.
However, the two sides have not made much tangible progress due to disagreements over the definition of "denuclearization." The US has demanded that North Korea take clearer steps to abandon its nuclear arsenal, while Pyongyang has demanded that Washington take corresponding actions.
An anonymous US official revealed on February 21 that President Trump has four priorities for this summit, including improving relations between Washington and Pyongyang, establishing lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula, denuclearization, and repatriating the remains of soldiers killed in the Korean War.
