'I See Yellow Flowers on Green Grass' Earns Over 70 Billion VND After One Month
The film adapted from Nguyen Nhat Anh's novel became the most popular psychological work in Vietnamese cinema to date.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that the film I See Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass has earned $3.5 million (over VND70 billion) since its release in early October, becoming the highest-grossing psychological film in the Vietnamese market to date. Still showing in about 60 theaters, the film is expected to reach $4 million (over VND80 billion).
The American film newspaper commented: "The coming-of-age story touches the nostalgia of the country's growing and modern middle class." The plot, adapted from the literary work of the same name by writer Nguyen Nhat Anh, tells the story of the challenges, confrontations and jealousy of a 12-year-old brother with his younger brother in a Vietnamese village in the late 1980s.
Earlier in its opening week, director Victor Vu’s film grossed one million USD, becoming the third highest-grossing film in the domestic market, behind De Mai Tinh 2 (by Charlie Nguyen) and Qua Tim Mau (by Victor Vu). The family drama film created an unprecedented fever at the Vietnamese box office, and is considered a peaceful song about childhood.

With a budget of nearly 20 billion VND, I See Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass is among the most expensive projects in the country. Compared to films commissioned by the state in recent years such as Living with History, The Road to Dien Bien or Long Thanh Cam Gia Ca, I See Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass is a welcome phenomenon, marking the successful cooperation between the Department of Cinema and private film studios.
I See Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass is the 11th film by director Victor Vu, after Vietnamese box office hits such as Bloody Heart (2014), Scandal: Red Carpet Secret (2012) and Bride Wars (2011). The creative team also includes veteran director and screenwriter Viet Linh. The film is scheduled to participate in the American Film Market on November 8 in Los Angeles.
