Fragrant purple garlic of Thai people, planting 10m2 can earn 1 million VND
In the first days of the new year, Thai farmers living in Bong village, Chieng Pan commune, Yen Chau district, Son La province are busy harvesting purple garlic in the fields...
Yen Chau district is known as a harsh land, divided into two distinct seasons, winter is cold and bitter, summer is hot and stuffy due to the influence of the Lao wind. Therefore, the Thai people in Chieng Pan commune have known how to take advantage of natural conditions to grow local purple garlic, a long-standing variety, to increase family income.
Purple garlic is a rare garlic variety commonly grown in Chieng Pan, Chieng Dong and other communes of Yen Chau district. This garlic variety is grown in large fields along National Highway 6 from Yen Chau town to the foot of Chieng Dong slope of Son La province.

Sharing with Dan Viet, Ms. Lo Thi Mai, Bong village, Chieng Pan commune said: I have been growing this local purple garlic variety since 2008 on more than 1,000 m2 of rice fields left by my grandparents. This garlic variety, different from other types of garlic on the market, has small garlic cloves but has a high essential oil content, naturally concentrated in the garlic cloves, which garlic growers like us cannot influence by scientific methods or use stimulants to make the garlic grow as big as Chinese garlic varieties.
Since I planted this purple garlic, many traders have come to the fields to buy in large quantities. Many consumers love purple garlic and have named it a Northwest specialty, like the specialty of dried buffalo meat in the Northwest...

Usually after harvesting rice, the fertile fields of Yen Chau district are planted with purple garlic by the Thai ethnic people. With fertile soil, rich in nutrients, the highland people here hardly use stimulants in cultivation, but only use household manure to fertilize the plants. Irrigation water is taken by the Thai ethnic people from small streams leading from the hills to the fields, so the nutritional quality of purple garlic is very high, clean, ensuring food safety for consumers.
The newly harvested purple garlic bunches are bundled by the farmers, to be loaded onto trucks to sell to traders.
Currently, Yen Chau purple garlic is sold on the market at a price ten times higher than normal garlic, especially during Tet, bringing a large source of income to the Thai ethnic people in Yen Chau district. This type of garlic is always out of stock, but only those who have used purple garlic know its true value, which is incomparable. Everything has its price, "you get what you pay for", so purple garlic is "worth the price".
Ms. Mai is selecting large, quality purple garlic bulbs to dry as seeds for planting in the next crop.
Talking to Dan Viet, Ms. Lo Thi Mai, Bong village added: I have been growing this purple garlic for 10 years now. The purple garlic variety has the characteristic of having many small, purple branches, and a more fragrant flavor than other types of garlic I have grown. The amount of essential oil in purple garlic is many times higher than normal garlic and can be preserved for a very long time. My family's income from growing garlic is on average nearly 100 million VND per year. Up to now, the family's life has been much better than before.
