On the afternoon of February 9, at the Party Central Committee Headquarters, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong had a high-level online phone call with Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party and Prime Minister of Japan Kishida Fumio.

The two leaders expressed their pleasure at meeting again and held a high-level phone call, emphasizing that this was an opening activity to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations. Accordingly, the two leaders agreed to support the two sides to coordinate well in organizing commemorative activities to create cohesion, promote cooperation in all fields, bring the relationship between the two countries to new heights, and bring practical benefits to the people of both countries.
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong expressed his delight at the development of Vietnam-Japan relations and highly appreciated Japan's contributions to Vietnam's socio-economic development, in which Japan is currently Vietnam's leading economic partner with the largest official development assistance (ODA), and one of Vietnam's leading investment, trade and labor cooperation partners.
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong affirmed that Vietnam persistently pursues a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation and development, diversification and multilateralization of foreign relations; proactively and actively integrates comprehensively and extensively into the international community; Vietnam is a reliable partner and an active and responsible member of the international community. In particular, Japan is Vietnam's leading important partner.

During the phone call, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong also outlined directions to strengthen bilateral relations in the coming time. Firstly, strengthening political relations through maintaining regular visits and contacts at high and all levels, promoting the effectiveness of cooperation and dialogue mechanisms between the two sides in many flexible forms.
The General Secretary respectfully invited the Emperor and Empress, members of the Japanese Government and Royal Family to soon visit Vietnam.
Second, promote relations at all channels and levels, including relations between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, between the Governments and National Assemblies of the two countries; promote exchanges between young leaders and female leaders of the two ruling parties; develop people-to-people exchanges and cooperation between localities of the two countries to enhance friendship and close ties between the people of the two countries, continue to create favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community to live, work and study in Japan in order to contribute to further deepening the Vietnam-Japan Extensive Strategic Partnership.
The General Secretary proposed that Japan continue to accompany and support Vietnam in industrialization and modernization, strengthen connectivity between the two economies, cooperate to ensure economic, financial, energy and food security, promote investment, trade and agricultural cooperation, develop high-quality human resources, infrastructure, science and technology, supporting industries, digital transformation, green transformation and respond to non-traditional challenges.
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong affirmed that in the context of the current world situation, Vietnam is ready to coordinate with Japan on regional and world issues, including coordination within ASEAN frameworks and multilateral forums.

Prime Minister Kishida thanked the Emperor and Empress for their invitation to visit Vietnam; expressed his joy and emphasized that this was an important phone call in the year commemorating the 50th anniversary of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of Japan-ASEAN relations. At the same time, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his high agreement with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s assessment of the development of the bilateral relationship, and outlined the importance, direction and specific measures to strengthen cooperation between Vietnam and Japan in the coming time.
Prime Minister Kishida also emphasized that Japan will continue to expand cooperation activities with Vietnam in the fields of investment, trade, science and technology and other fields; highly appreciate the contribution of the Vietnamese community, currently up to nearly 500,000 people, to the socio-economic development of Japan. Prime Minister Kishida expressed his willingness to create favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community to live, work and study stably in Japan.
Prime Minister Kishida shared some of Japan’s new policies in various fields, including foreign affairs and economic development. At the same time, he said that in the current rapidly changing and complicated regional and global situation, the two countries need to strengthen coordination and support efforts to strengthen peace, cooperation and development in the region and the world.
The two leaders agreed that the high-level phone call ended well. Both sides affirmed the importance of bilateral relations for each country, adding new momentum to the development of bilateral relations in the coming time. The two sides agreed to direct the departments, ministries, branches and localities of the two countries to implement the results of the talks as well as the agreements reached between the two countries, and promote cooperation mechanisms to further develop bilateral relations./.
