- December 1967: Staff of the Documentation Department of Study Magazine (now Communist Magazine); on December 19, 1967, he was admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam.

- August 1968 - August 1973: Editor of Communist Magazine; field trip to Thanh Oai district, Ha Tay province (now Hanoi); Secretary of the Communist Magazine Youth Union.

- September 1973 - April 1976: Postgraduate student of the Faculty of Economics and Politics at the Nguyen Ai Quoc High-Level Party School (now the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics).

- May 1976 - August 1980: Editor of Party Building Committee, Communist Magazine, Deputy Secretary of Party Cell.

- September 1980 - August 1981: Studied Russian at Nguyen Ai Quoc High-Level Party School.

- September 1981 - July 1983: Intern and defended the thesis of Associate Professor (now Doctor) in Historical Sciences (majoring in Party Building) at the Academy of Social Sciences of the Soviet Union, under the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

- August 1983 - August 1987: Deputy Head of Party Building Department, Communist Magazine.

- September 1987 - February 1989: Head of Party Building Committee; Deputy Secretary of Party Committee (July 1985 - December 1988), Secretary of Party Committee of Communist Magazine (December 1988 - December 1991).

- March 1989 - April 1990: Member of the Editorial Board of Communist Magazine.

- May 1990 - July 1991: Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Communist Magazine.

- August 1991 - August 1996: Editor-in-Chief of Communist Magazine. At the mid-term National Delegates Conference of the 7th Party Congress (January 1994), he was elected to the Party Central Committee. He was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam in the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th terms.

- August 1996 - February 1998: Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, concurrently Head of the University Personnel Committee and directly in charge of the Hanoi Party Committee's Propaganda Department. At the 4th Conference of the Party Central Committee, term VIII (December 1997), he was elected to the Politburo. He was a member of the Politburo of terms VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII.

- February 1998 - January 2000: In charge of the Party's Ideology, Culture and Science work.

- March 1998 - November 2006: Vice Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council; Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council, in charge of the Party's theoretical work (November 2001 - August 2006).

- August 1999 - April 2001: Standing member of the Politburo, Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

- January 2000 - June 2006: Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, terms XII, XIII, XIV.

- May 2002 - July 19, 2024: National Assembly Delegate of terms XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV.

- June 2006 - July 2011: Chairman of the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, 11th and 12th terms, Secretary of the National Assembly Party Delegation, Member of the National Defense and Security Council.

- January 2011 - July 19, 2024: General Secretary of the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, terms XI, XII, XIII, Secretary of the Central Military Commission.

- February 2013 - July 19, 2024: Head of the Central Steering Committee on anti-corruption and negativity.

- August 2016 - July 19, 2024: Participated in the Standing Committee of the Central Public Security Party Committee for the 2015-2020 and 2020-2025 terms.

- October 2018 - April 2021: General Secretary, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for the 2016-2021 term; Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council.

- April 2021 - July 19, 2024: General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Secretary of the Central Military Commission, Member of the Standing Committee of the Central Public Security Party Committee, Head of the Central Steering Committee on anti-corruption and anti-negativity.

- February 2, 2023: Comrade was awarded the 55-year Party membership badge.

- July 18, 2024: Comrade was awarded the Gold Star Order.

- July 19, 2024: Comrade passed away.
