General Secretary and his wife meet with the Emperor and Empress of Japan
On the morning of March 3, at the West Lake Guest House, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and his wife had a cordial meeting with Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress who are on a State visit to Vietnam.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong expressed his joy at welcoming the King and Queen in a warm atmosphere at the beginning of the New Year 2017 in the capital Hanoi.
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said that the first visit to Vietnam by the King and Queen is a special event of great historical significance, marking a new step of development in the friendly relations between the two countries and the two peoples of Vietnam and Japan.
Emperor Akihito expressed his pleasure in visiting the beautiful country of Vietnam; recalled his deep impressions during his meetings with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in Japan in 2008 and 2015; and sincerely thanked General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and his wife as well as other leaders of Vietnam and the Vietnamese people for giving the Emperor and Empress such a warm and friendly welcome.
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong happily recalled the profound memories of his meetings with the King and Queen; affirmed that Vietnam highly values its relations with Japan, wishes to consolidate and deepen the friendship with the Japanese people; and expressed gratitude for Japan's great and valuable support for Vietnam in socio-economic development and national construction over the past many years.
Emperor Akihito and Empress along with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and his wife had in-depth discussions on culture and cultural exchange between the two countries and peoples; emphasizing that Vietnam and Japan have many cultural similarities and long-standing exchanges in history. That is the close connection between Vietnam and Japan.
Emperor Akihito expressed his deep sympathy for Vietnam's war losses and was deeply impressed by the great achievements Vietnam has made on the path of renovation and national construction; highly appreciated Vietnam's contributions to peace, and wished that the people of the two countries would continue to cooperate for world peace.
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and Emperor Akihito expressed their delight at the relationship between the two countries; they said that the cooperative and friendly relationship between Vietnam and Japan is currently at its best stage of development in history; they hoped that the visit would contribute to strongly promoting the increasingly deep and extensive development of the relationship between the two countries.
On the occasion of the New Year, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and his wife wished the King, Queen and members of the Japanese Royal Family good health, prosperity for Japan and happiness for the Japanese people./.
