UNESCO Director General visits the ancient capital of Hue

On June 23, Ms. Irina Bokova, Director General of UNESCO, paid a working visit to Thua Thien-Hue province, visiting the Hue Monuments Complex, a world tangible and intangible cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO.

At the reception, Mr. Nguyen Van Cao, Chairman of the People's Committee of Thua Thien - Hue province, thanked UNESCO for its support, assistance and cooperation to Thua Thien - Hue province over the past years. In particular, the visit of Ms. Irina Bokova is particularly meaningful when Thua Thien - Hue province is preparing to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Complex of Hue Monuments being recognized as a World Cultural Heritage, and the 10th anniversary of Nha Nhac - Vietnamese Court Music being recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Over the past 30 years, UNESCO has helped Thua Thien - Hue province implement many projects to protect, preserve, restore and conserve cultural relics of the ancient capital in general and cultural relics in the Hue Imperial Citadel Complex in particular. Ms. Irina Bokova's visit to Hue once again contributed to promoting the effective cooperation between UNESCO and Thua Thien - Hue province.

Ms. Irina Bokova highly appreciated the effectiveness as well as the efforts and commitments of Thua Thien - Hue province in protecting, preserving and promoting cultural heritages. This visit is an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of cultural heritage values ​​and the contributions of Vietnam as well as Thua Thien - Hue province to the Complex of Hue Monuments, a cultural heritage of humanity. Ms. Irina Bokova affirmed that in the coming time, UNESCO will continue to help, cooperate and support Thua Thien - Hue in preserving and protecting heritages, responding to climate change, especially transferring professional knowledge, sharing experiences in sustainable development; thereby, attracting more participation of the community, locality and people in the work of protecting and promoting cultural heritage values.
