Bishop Paul Bui Van Doc - Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City Diocese - has just passed away at the Vatican, Rome (Italy), at the age of 74.

Archbishop Paul Bui Van Doc suffered a stroke after celebrating Mass at St. Paul's Basilica outside Rome. Although he was rushed to the hospital, he did not survive.

"I am in France, preparing to fly to Italy to carry out the necessary procedures to transfer the Archbishop's body to Ho Chi Minh City for the funeral," said Father Xuan.

Archbishop Paul Bui Van Doc and 32 members of the Episcopal Council of the Catholic Church of Vietnam are on an Ad Limina pilgrimage. The group traveled from France to Rome to meet Pope Francis on March 5 to present the situation of the Catholic Church of Vietnam.

Bishop Paul Bui Van Doc was born on November 11, 1944 in Da Lat. He was ordained a priest on December 17, 1970.

In 1995, he was appointed Vicar General of the Diocese of Da Lat. Four years later, he was appointed by Pope John Paul II as Bishop of the Diocese of My Tho.

In 2013, the Pope appointed him as Archbishop, Coadjutor of the Archdiocese of Saigon; and concurrently as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of My Tho.

On March 22, 2014, Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Cardinal Gioan Baotixita Pham Minh Man as Archbishop, and Coadjutor Archbishop Phaolo Bui Van Doc succeeded him as Archbishop.
