Detailed summary of 2014 World Cup qualifying results

June 8, 2013 22:59

Last night and early this morning, the 2014 World Cup qualifiers took place simultaneously on European, African and South American football fields.

In Europe, Portugal had to work extremely hard to get a minimal 1-0 victory against direct opponent Russia, thanks to the only goal of Helder Postiga right at the beginning of the match.

With this victory, Portugal temporarily rose to the top of Group F with 14 points, 2 points more than Russia but having played 2 more matches.

Meanwhile, the "big guy" Italy was surprisingly held to a 0-0 draw by the Czech Republic on the day Mario Balotelli was sent off. After this draw, Italy still holds the top spot in Group B with 14 points, 4 points more than the next closest opponent, Bulgaria.

The most impressive victory in the series of matches that took place last night belonged to Bosnia. This team won 5-0 against the tiny team Latvia, to consolidate the top position in Group G with 16 points and a goal difference of +20. Coming in right behind was Greece - the team won 1-0 against Lithuania.

Meanwhile, in the South American region, despite taking the lead, Venezuela still could not win all 3 points, as Bolivia equalized in the final minutes of the match.

In this series of matches, despite playing at home, Argentina was held to a 0-0 draw by Colombia.

Portugal beat Russia 1-0.
