June 8, 2013 22:59

Last night and this morning, the 2014 World Cup qualifiers took place simultaneously on pitches across Europe, Africa, and South America.

In Europe, Portugal had to work incredibly hard to secure a narrow 1-0 victory against direct rivals Russia, thanks to a single goal from Helder Postiga early in the match.

With this victory, Portugal temporarily moved to the top of Group F with 14 points, two points more than Russia but having played two more matches.

Meanwhile, Italian giants were surprisingly held to a 0-0 draw by the Czech Republic on a day when Mario Balotelli was sent off. Following this draw, Italy still holds sole possession of first place in Group B with 14 points, four points ahead of their closest rival, Bulgaria.

The most impressive victory in last night's matches belonged to Bosnia. They thrashed minnow Latvia 5-0, consolidating their position at the top of Group G with 16 points and a goal difference of +20. Greece is right behind them, having won 1-0 against Lithuania.

Meanwhile, in South America, despite taking the lead, Venezuela failed to secure all three points, allowing Bolivia to equalize in the final minutes of the match.

In this match, despite playing at home, Argentina was held to a 0-0 draw by Colombia.

Portugal defeated Russia 1-0.
