The decree on the President's website states that the move is determined by Article 130 of the Constitution. By law, the government submits its resignation after the prime minister has resigned.
Earlier, the head of the Cabinet, Mr. Serzh Sargsyan, resigned from his post. Thus, he complied with the demands of the protesters.
First Deputy Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan was appointed Acting Prime Minister.
At a rally in central Yerevan, opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan said a new prime minister would be appointed next week.
"Next will be the formation of an interim government, and then there will be early parliamentary elections," he added.
According to Mr. Pashinyan, the first stage of the "velvet revolution" is over.
The MP said that an agreement had been reached with Karapetyan to release all those arrested during the protests. On Wednesday, the opposition intends to hold talks with him on a peaceful transfer of power.
