Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has been officially impeached.

(Baonghean.vn) - On August 31, the Brazilian Senate officially voted to impeach suspended President Dilma Rousseff, and the interim government of President Michel Temer will remain in power until the end of Rousseff's current term in December 2018.

After five days of political impeachment proceedings against Rousseff, in the early hours of August 31st local time, with 61 votes in favor and 20 against, the Brazilian Senate officially approved the decision to remove Rousseff from office on charges of concealing public funds.

Thus, she became the first female president of Brazil to be impeached by the Senate, ending 13 years of rule by the left-wing Workers' Party (PT). Interim President Michel Temer will serve until the end of 2018.

A separate vote will also take place to decide whether Rousseff will be banned from holding other state administrative positions for eight years.

According to the plan, both Rousseff and Temer will deliver speeches on September 1st to end the eight-month process that has paralyzed Brazilian politics and prolonged the worst economic crisis in a century in the South American nation.

Also on September 1st, the inauguration ceremony for the new President will be held in a shortened format, as the new president will immediately fly to China to attend the G20 summit.

Previously, President Rousseff had repeatedly stated that if the Senate voted to impeach her, it would be a coup, damaging Brazilian democracy. She also called for a referendum on the possibility of holding early elections, giving the people the power to decide who would lead the country's future.

President Rousseff has been suspended from office since May due to allegations of violating fiscal responsibility laws to manipulate statistics to reduce the 2014 budget deficit and of using supplemental funds not included in the budget without the approval of Congress.
