Brazil's Folha de Sao Pablo newspaper reported on March 30 that President Rousseff and her advisers are discussing a bill to submit to Congress with the aim of holding early elections.
In this case, Ms. Rousseff would avoid being tried in a political court in the National Assembly, which is being pushed by the opposition to remove the President. Ms. Rousseff won a second term in October 2014, and according to the Constitution, her term will end on December 31, 2018.
After Vice President Michel Temer's PMDB party, part of the ruling coalition, decided to resign from the cabinet on March 29, former President Lula da Silva, founder of the ruling Workers' Party (PT), and Ms. Rousseff also held an emergency meeting to discuss measures to overcome the crisis.
Also according to Folha de Sao Pablo, although PMDB made the above statement, there are still ministers of this party who want to stay in the current government.
The political crisis in Brazil has been escalating in recent times with accusations that President Rouseff and former President Lula da Silva are involved in a huge corruption scandal at the national oil corporation Petrobras.
However, Ms. Rousseff’s administration has declared the above allegations and the accompanying moves as a coup attempt. To date, more than 100 individuals have been formally charged with corruption, money laundering and forming a gang in this scandal, including dozens of leaders from Brazil’s leading construction and engineering corporations. About 50 politicians, including many lawmakers and state governors, are under investigation./.
