President Donald Trump successfully concludes his state visit to Vietnam

On the afternoon of November 12, President of the United States of America Donald Trump left Hanoi, successfully concluding his State visit to Vietnam, at the invitation of President Tran Dai Quang from November 11-12, 2017.

During the visit, President Donald Trump held talks with President Tran Dai Quang and witnessed the signing of documents, met with the press; paid a courtesy call to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong; and met with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

During the visit, the two sides issued a Joint Statement between the United States and Vietnam. During the meetings, the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening relations based on previous Joint Statements between the two countries; respect for the United Nations Charter and international law; and respect for each other's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and political regime.

The two sides committed to deepening and expanding bilateral trade and investment relations through formal mechanisms, including the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA); committed to seeking solutions to outstanding issues in agricultural trade, including catfish, shrimp, and mangoes; and committed to promoting free and fair trade and investment in priority areas, including electronic payment services, automobiles, and intellectual property rights enforcement.

The two sides affirmed their shared commitment to further deepening defense cooperation and their shared determination to address regional security challenges; affirmed the Action Plan on Vietnam-US Defense Cooperation for the 2018-2020 period to implement the 2011 Memorandum of Understanding on Enhancing Bilateral Defense Cooperation and the 2015 Joint Vision Statement on Defense Relations.

The two sides reaffirmed the importance of continued cooperation to overcome the consequences of war; pledged to cooperate with Vietnam in efforts to search for information about Vietnamese soldiers missing in action during the war; and supported the strengthening of relations between the two peoples.

The two sides committed to deepening the U.S.-ASEAN Strategic Partnership based on the principles outlined in the 2016 Sunnylands Declaration; agreed on the importance of the peaceful denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. The two leaders called for the full and effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), and the early conclusion of an effective, legally binding Code of Conduct in the South China Sea (COC). They also called on all South China Sea claimants to clarify and enforce their maritime claims in accordance with international law, as reflected in the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and to comply in good faith with their international legal obligations in managing and resolving disputes.
