South Korean president says US-North Korea summit is coming soon

"I think Chairman Kim Jong-un's visit to China is a sign that the second US-North Korea summit is about to take place and will have a positive impact on the success of this summit," South Korean President Moon Jae-in told reporters today, according toAFP.

According to the South Korean President, the second US-North Korea summit and the North Korean leader's visit to Seoul will be a "turning point in firmly consolidating peace on the Korean Peninsula". He also said that China plays many roles in the issue of denuclearization of the peninsula.

The South Korean president noted that the preconditions for the two Koreas to resume cooperative activities at the Kaesong complex and the Mount Kumgang resort have been basically met. South Korea will also seek to resolve the issue of international sanctions against North Korea "as soon as possible," butPyongyang "needs to take clear steps towards denuclearization".

During his visit to China on January 8, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un discussed with Chinese President Xi Jinping how to handle the situation on the Korean peninsula as well as promote the denuclearization discussion process.

Kim Jong-un said he has not changed his stance on the agreements he made with US President Donald Trump at a summit in Singapore last June and wants to pursue peaceful solutions. However, he "expressed concern" about the stalemate in efforts to improve US-North Korea relations and discuss denuclearization with the US.

The Chinese president agreed with the views and issues raised by North Korea, affirming that "we support North Korea and the United States to hold summits and achieve results, and support relevant parties to resolve their legitimate concerns through dialogue" and hoping that the United States and North Korea will reach a compromise with each other.
