The Israeli president and prime minister both called the bus explosion a terrorist attack. However, the police were more cautious, concluding that it was a targeted attack, possibly terrorism, or the work of other criminal groups.

All of the injured were on the bus that exploded, fortunately no one was injured in the burning cars next to it. At least two people were seriously injured.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “We will investigate those behind the explosion. The terrorists will be held accountable.”

“The fight against terrorism is relentless. We will pursue it to the end and will only stop when life is completely peaceful,” said President Reuven Rivlin.

The bus explosion occurred south of Jerusalem at 6am, Israel's rush hour. Witnesses said flames were billowing and thick black smoke filled the sky. It took firefighters several hours to bring the blaze under control. A forensic team was also called in shortly afterwards.

The bus attack comes seven months into escalating violence between Palestinians and Israelis. Although violence has eased in recent weeks, there have been several shootings.
