US President Donald Trump appoints new Secretary of Homeland Security

The White House announced on October 11 that US President Donald Trump had appointed Ms. Kirstjen Nielsen as Secretary of Homeland Security.

Ms. Nielsen is currently the "deputy" to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly.

Ms. Nielsen previously served as chief of staff when Mr. Kelly was Secretary of Homeland Security and moved to the White House when Mr. Kelly was appointed to the new position in July 2017.

Ms. Nielsen's nomination will still have to be approved by the Republican-controlled Senate.

The US Department of Homeland Security handles issues related to airport and border security, immigration policy, disaster response, refugee admission and other issues./.
