US President Donald Trump vows to defend the UK if necessary

US President Donald Trump promises to protect the UK.

"I have a very good relationship with your prime minister, I would say… I support much of what she says and does. I support you very strongly militarily. We will protect you, if something happens, although I hope nothing happens," Mr Trump said in an interview with ITV.

Extracts of the interview, which will air in full on Sunday (January 28), were released on the Good Morning Britain TV show's Twitter page.

In 2017, Prime Minister May extended an invitation to President Trump for an official visit to the UK from Queen Elizabeth II. Some 2 million Britons subsequently signed a petition calling for the cancellation of the US President’s state visit. Their anger was sparked by Trump’s ban on immigration to the US.

In early January, Mr. Trump tweeted that he was canceling his visit to the UK, and explained his decision as disagreeing with the previous administration's actions regarding the construction of the $1.2 billion embassy in London.

However, Trump's recent statement did not mention canceling his official visit to the UK.

During a meeting in Davos "on the sidelines" of the World Economic Forum with British Prime Minister Theresa May, Donald Trump said that rumors about bad relations between the two countries were incorrect, and he also promised to increase trade turnover with this country "many times".
