In a statement issued from the White House on November 26, US President Barack Obama sent his deepest condolences and prayers to Fidel Castro's family and the Cuban people.

President Obama affirmed: “History will record and evaluate the enormous influence of Mr. Fidel Castro on his people and the world around him. In the days ahead, the Cuban people will remember the past and at the same time look to the future. The Cuban people will always have a friend and partner in the United States.”

President Obama made a historic visit to Cuba in March 2016, declaring that he would lift the embargo on Cuba.

He is the first sitting US President to visit Cuba since 1928.

In December 2014, Mr. Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro, Mr. Fidel's brother, announced the normalization of US-Cuba relations.

The US and Cuba later re-established diplomatic relations, opening embassies in each other's capitals in July 2015.

Fidel Castro is the symbol of the Cuban revolution.

Meanwhile, Reuters news agency also reported that United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also sent condolences to the Cuban people after the passing of Fidel Castro.

According to Mr. Ban Ki-moon, leader Fidel Castro is a symbol of the Cuban revolution, prominent in Latin America and influential in international issues.

As Prime Minister, President, Commander-in-Chief of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces and First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro led Cuba for nearly 50 years, leaving a major mark on global politics and issues.

Fidel Castro will always be remembered by the Cuban people for his leadership of the revolution and the progress Cuba made in education, literacy and health.

Along with sending condolences to the Cuban people, the UN Secretary General also said that the organization will continue to support the Cuban people, and hopes that Cuba will continue to make progress on the path of reform and achieve prosperity./.
