President Obama's correct action, which was supported by the majority of Americans, immediately met with opposition from the "lobbying group" advocating for respect for individual gun ownership rights.
In the presence of Vice President Joe Biden and representatives of the families of 20 students killed in the Newtown massacre in Connecticut last month, President Obama signed into law an executive order without congressional approval. This package of measures aims to strengthen background checks for gun buyers and expand school safety programs.
Speaking at a press conference following the signing ceremony, President Obama emphasized: “One month after 20 beloved children and 6 brave adults were tragically taken from us at Sandy Hook Elementary School, more than 900 American citizens have lost their lives to gun violence—900 deaths in the past month. Every day, the number of Americans killed by gun-related violence continues to rise. I am presenting this series of specific recommendations based on the assessment of the task force chaired by Vice President Joe Biden. In the coming days, I will use all the powers of the presidency to ensure these recommendations are implemented.”
The measures signed into law by President Obama also include closing certain retail and display locations for guns, banning armor-piercing ammunition, and limiting gun owners to magazines of 10 rounds or fewer. Government agencies are also required to provide information related to background checks for gun buyers and to study new ways to prevent "dangerous" individuals from owning guns. If fully implemented, this would be the largest gun control reform in the United States in decades.
Earlier, on January 15, the New York state government also took the lead in gun control efforts by passing a bill tightening regulations on the sale and ownership of firearms.
Meanwhile, several politicians and the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA) in the US immediately declared their opposition to President Obama's efforts.
In a statement, Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida said that none of the measures proposed by President Obama could prevent massacres like the one at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The politician further argued that President Obama is seeking to obstruct the rights of American citizens instead of seriously addressing the root causes of such violence.
Representatives of the National Rifle Association also issued a statement saying they would work with Congress to find substantive solutions to protect what they call “the most vulnerable asset”—American children. The association argued that the government’s focus on attacking gun owners while disregarding children is not a solution to the crisis America is facing.
Given this situation, many people are concerned that it is unclear when the United States will be able to resolve the problem of gun violence.
