US President Trump responds to letter from North Korean leader

On August 4, US officials said they had delivered a reply letter from US President Donald Trump to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Speaking to reporters, US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim, an official who plays an important role in negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang, handed the letter to North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho in Singapore to deliver to leader Kim Jong-un.


Also according to Ms. Nauert, previously, while attending the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) held in Singapore within the framework of the 51st ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM 51) and related conferences, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his North Korean counterpart had a diplomatic meeting.

Earlier, on August 1, President Trump received another letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The content of this letter has not been released, but in the letter dated July 6 and posted on Twitter by President Trump, leader Kim Jong-un called the historic meeting between the two leaders on June 12 in Singapore "the beginning of a meaningful journey."

The North Korean leader also believed that his and President Trump's "strong determination, sincere efforts and unique approach" to "open up a new future between North Korea and the US will surely bear fruit"./.
