On June 25, Putin called Obama to discuss the conflict in Ukraine, developments involving the Islamic State (IS), and the agreement on Iran's nuclear program.

According to AFP, the crisis in Ukraine has pushed Russia-US relations to their lowest point since the Cold War. Earlier this week, the US announced for the first time that it would deploy heavy weapons to parts of Eastern and Central Europe.

Following the US announcement, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) also pledged to increase its military presence in Eastern Europe to address the conflicts in eastern Ukraine.

According to information from the White House, President Putin initiated the phone call with President Obama. The White House statement said that Obama reiterated the demand that Russia fulfill its commitments under the Minsk agreement, including withdrawing Russian troops and removing weapons from Ukrainian territory.

The crisis in Ukraine has claimed 6,500 lives over the past year, and the agreement signed in Minsk between the relevant parties has been repeatedly violated.

Obama and Putin also discussed the situation in Syria and the current expansion of ISIS. In addition, the two leaders addressed the historic discussions between major world powers and Iran regarding its controversial nuclear program.
