Just hours after the ceasefire ended, all armed forces participating in the military operation in eastern Ukraine received orders from President Poroshenko to attack.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his European partners failed to persuade Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to extend the ceasefire, which expired on the night of June 30 in the eastern provinces.

In a speech to Russian ambassadors from various countries meeting in Moscow, President Putin stated that just hours after the ceasefire ended, all armed forces participating in the military operation in eastern Ukraine received orders to attack from President Poroshenko. Putin asserted that the Ukrainian president bears full responsibility for the current violence.

"Unfortunately, President Poroshenko has made the decision to resume military operations, and we, that is, both Russia and Europe, have been unable to convince him that the path to lasting peace, stability, and solidarity cannot be achieved through war," said President Vladimir Putin.

Earlier that day, the Russian Foreign Ministry called on the Ukrainian government to end its military operation and reinstate the ceasefire in eastern Ukraine. The statement said that Russia “demands that the Ukrainian authorities cease shelling villages and cities inhabited by civilians, and reinstate a genuine, not a sham, ceasefire to protect the lives of its citizens.”
