When he officially becomes a candidate for US President, Mr. Trump will be provided with classified information by the current President. This worries Mr. Obama.

Days after bluntly declaring that Donald Trump was unfit to be the Commander-in-Chief of the United States, President Obama on August 4 warned the Republican candidate that he should be careful with his words after being provided with classified information before entering the official election.

Mr Obama told reporters that he would follow the American tradition of providing intelligence to Mr Trump as well as his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.

“They were told this was classified information,” President Obama said. “If they want to be president, they have to start acting like presidents. Now they are getting this information and they have to keep it from going out.”

On August 1, Mr. Obama attacked Mr. Trump as “unfit to serve as president.” Mr. Obama also pressured Republican officials who endorsed Mr. Trump to consider withdrawing their support for him in the context of his statements that were either false or controversial.

The US President declared that it was time for people to say “enough is enough”.

On August 4, Mr. Obama said that candidate Trump was eligible to receive classified information because "if someone is the Republican presidential candidate, they need to receive security information so that when they win, they don't have to start from scratch in taking on a new job."

President Obamaalso mocked Donald Trump's argument that the November election could be rigged against him. The current US President compared the former reality TV star to a child who gets upset after losing a game.

President Obama affirmed: “The federal government does not conduct the election process.”

Mr. Obama emphasized that states and localities handle elections and the federal government only supports local governments in ensuring voting machines are secure and enforcing federal powers to protect voter rights.

It is unclear when the two presidential candidates will receive the classified information. President Harry Truman initiated the tradition in 1952. Truman took office unaware that the United States had successfully developed the atomic bomb.

Current and former intelligence officials say the information provided in the meeting with the candidate was important but left out some sensitive intelligence, such as sources and methods of collection.

Such internal meetings have been met with mixed reviews. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan used the Clinton email controversy to argue that she did not deserve to receive classified information. Trump’s impulsive style and penchant forRussian President Putinprompted Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid to suggest that the Republican candidate should be denied access to classified information.
