May 26 is the first day of the G7 Summit in Ise-Shima, central Japan. Mr. Obama is expected to visit Hiroshima on May 27 after the meeting ends.
Mr. Obama said that his visit to the city that was once attacked by atomic bombs was not only a reminder of the terrible damage caused by World War II, which killed millions of innocent people around the world, but also a message to everyone to try to reduce conflicts, build peace and reduce the risk of nuclear war in the future.
Mr. Obama recalled the success of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, in which Iran and six other powers reached an agreement to end its nuclear program.
However, Mr. Obama is very concerned about nuclear tests in North Korea, considering this a "great concern for all countries".
Mr Obama said he did not think the goal of a world without nuclear weapons would be achieved during his term. However, he called on countries to abolish nuclear weapons during his visit to Hiroshima.
The White House said President Obama is scheduled to visit the memorial at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park on the afternoon of May 26 and will deliver remarks on a nuclear-free world.
