The appointee is scholar Rami Hamdullah, a member of President Abbas's Fatah party.

Wafa, the official Palestinian news agency, reported yesterday (June 2nd) that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has appointed a new Prime Minister, replacing Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, who had just resigned.

The replacement is scholar Rami Hamdullah, a member of President Abbas's Fatah party. Hamdullah is a professor who studied in the UK and is the rector of al-Najah University in the West Bank. However, Hamdullah is considered to have little political experience.

The decision was announced by President Abbas yesterday afternoon. President Abbas also asked Hamdullah to form a new technocratic government.

On April 13th, President Abbas accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Salam Fayyad due to disagreements over government policy.

Relations between the two Palestinian leaders have deteriorated since March after Prime Minister Fayyad accepted the resignation of Finance Minister Nabil Qasis, contrary to President Abbas's wishes.
