(Baonghean.vn)- On May 15, French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Mr. Edouard Philippe, a conservative figure, as the country's new Prime Minister.

This is an unprecedented move in post-war France when choosing the head of government from a figure outside the President's party.

Mr. Philippe, 46 years old, mayor of the port city of Le Havre, northern France, will replace Mr. Bernard Cazeneuve as the new Prime Minister of France. Mr. Cazeneuve has been Prime Minister of France since the end of 2016 under former President Francois Hollande. This is Mr. Macron's first important appointment since taking office and will play an important role in his future success in leading France.

The prime minister, who heads the government, will be crucial in rallying support for President Macron to form a majority in parliament in next month’s election. Without that backing, Mr Macron will struggle to implement his economic reform agenda.

It is expected that Mr. Macron will introduce the full Cabinet members tomorrow, May 16./.
